What better bargain than a classic mystery at no cost. While not generally ranked among the memorable detective story writers because of the paucity of his production in that genre, he knew how to tell a story with subtlety and humor. I have to admit to ignorance of the fact that I was reading Trent's Last Case until coming to the description of the victim of the piece quite early in the book. Happily, I decided to keep on reading right to the very last page. i emphasise that because this one is really good to the last drop. Trent is the amateur detective with a preternatural gift for penetrating to the heart of a problem from the meagerest of clues. There is a lovely and lovable lady involved and a dark as a cave villain. Naturally, we must in a 1911 mystery have a Scotland Yard police officer as well as a genuinely benign uncle to the beautiful one. Other assorted characters populate this mansion of the extraordinary rich and powerful financier to give a rich flavor to the cast.Though more than a century old now, there is nothing stodgy or stiff about the writing which is redolent of the era when the British writers were creating the modern mystery. Not an "assigned reading" so one can sit back and enjoy it.

Creepy and as usual, way better than the movie! Loved it
The writing is wonderful, the twists and turns great fun, but what was most interesting to me was the modernity of the book 100 years after it was published.
I was expecting to read the ghost story, so I was disappointed to find I was reading a detective story. That being said, it was an ok read...not my type of story, but I finished it. I'm sure at the time it was written it was quite an exciting read.
Also known as Trent's Last Case by some. And if you don't know Trent you are really missing out.
Love the pacing, the intrigue, the characters, all put together in a very enjoyable package! I've never read any Trent stories, but I'm going to look for more.
This was not the "Woman in Black" that the movie was based on, which is what I was hoping for. I should have read the description, but who knew there were two books with the same title? It was a nice little mystery-romance though, and an enjoyable read. It had a couple of twists in it that I didn't expect. It was a pleasant, enjoyable read.
World famous financier, Sigbee Manderson, is murdered on the grounds of his palacial home and Philip Trent is called in to investigate. He gathers an astonishing number of clues, which clearly point to the murderer, but for special reasons, he decides not to arrest him. Later he discovers that his case isn't as "open and shut" as he thought it was. There are some wonderful twists.
The book is more popularly titled, Trent's Last Case. The sequel, Trent's Own Case was written 23 years later. Sadly, they are the only two novels in the series (though there were short stories involving the same gentleman sleuth). I really enjoyed this and look forward to reading the second one.
