It's true that this book is so dated it may never be considered a classic by modern readers. However, if one can navigate the story in spite of the distraction of the exaggerated 19th-century American "country" dialect assumed by the narrator and most of the other characters, there are some interesting thoughts here. The narrator switches back and forth between the comic "country mouse in the city" story line and occasional flights of philosophical musing (some of which are written in standard English rather than dialect). It is pretty easy to identify the fads and fashions of that era which the author was targeting, although no doubt some are so obscure to modern readers that we don't catch them in passing. And of course some themes--extreme/uncomfortable clothing styles adopted because "everyone is wearing them," sensationalised advertising techniques used to swindle gullible tourists, a serious (and seriously untalented) young poet aspiring for public recognition, even an episode about marital jealousy--can be universally appreciated.
